Statement on Paris Attack | 14. Nov. 2015

Dear friends of UNA Konstanz, dear participants of KICSim 2015:

On the 13. of Nov. 2015, the KICSim 2015 Team decided to add France as an additional committee for the Conference.

Just a few hours later the horrific terrorist attacks from DAESH on Paris, an „attack on the humanity and the freedom of the French people“, as Barack Obama said, happened.

All of us are deeply shocked and sorrowful about those events. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. In this difficult time the European countries need to stand together and support each other at all costs. However, this tragedy has not only triggered the concern of terrorism, but also reflected many other social problems including but not limited to security policy, integration, multiculturalism etc.

It is our notion that after the sadness and the condemning of this atrocity, we all have to calm our minds and think about the complicated causes as well as the potential progress we can make: the concerns for domestic security, the reassessment of terrorism, the growing misperception between different groups of people while the integration process meets the difficulty of maintaining cultural diversity while fighting against extremism…

„Power is yours“ is our motto, and we will try our best to provide a democratic and open platform to discuss the current interacted crisis in Europe for you to utilize the „power“ – though in a rational, democratic, legitimized and humane way – to address potential solutions.

The world needs peace now, but not without diversity of thoughts.

What we must remember is that violence and threats ought to be met with openness and respect for humanity. If terrorist acts lead to terror and fear, then these actions have succeeded and humanity has failed.

Your faithfully,
KICSim Organization Team

Europe.
A name that represents peace in our minds, much more than a treaty or an organization.
Though, what is happening to Europe right now?
Where is Europe heading with all its never ending crises?
Is Europe still able to handle all of this or might it be the beginning of a whole bigger depression that will Europe tear apart in the end?

We use this question as an opportunity, to create something new at this year´s KICSim. For a weekend we want to think about new ways to deal with the situation and solution to solve other problems that might face us in the near future.

This year´s Konstanz Interactive Crisis Simulation will take place from Friday, 4.12 until Sunday 6.12. at the University of Constance.

We are looking forward to a weekend of fruitful debates, worthwhile interchange and astonishing social events!

Only few years back Europe seemed to be one of the stablest, securest and wealthiest places in the world, in 2012 the EU even attained the Nobel Peace Price. In 2015, all the developments of the last years, yet the last decades culminate in a chaos of crises. The financial crisis has shaken the confidence in the European Union and has risen the question of Values throughout the Union. For millions of people Europe is still a dream place, though European Countries are currently not able to handle masses of refugees. Islamic terrorism is evoking fear within european citizens. The borders of Europe have rarely been as unstable, as they are today. Eastern Europe fears the on-going conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Turkey still tries to join the European Union. And Great Britain does not stop thinking about leaving the European Union. In international conflicts Europe tries to stay neutral, in a global perspective, Europe is losing its importance.

We reached a point where it´s important to think about new solutions and a way to go. There might be even more severe problems Europe has to face in the future. If Europe does not start to solve and prevent, further tensions might tear the Union apart.

Registration and more information are coming soon.

See you in December at the Lake of Constance

Konstanz Delegation: Paris International Model United Nations 2015

Konstanz Delegation

The PIMUN (Paris International Model United Nations) is one of the most important and prestigious Model United Nations in Europe and plays an important role in the whole world. This year (2015) the 4th PIMUN with 14 committees and over 750 delegates from over 100 countries was organized by the Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne.

It began at the 28th of May with the opening ceremony at “Le Bobino”, one of Paris’ cultural theatres. After a few speeches in the impressive auditorium, everyone went to the salon for champagne and international food out of 5 continents, to honour the diversity of nationalities and cultures.

The sessions started on the next day in rooms of the University. The councils this year were: UNIDO, DISEC, SOCHUM, UNESCO, the UN Commission on Status of Women, UNEP, African Union, Historical League of Nations, Triple joint Crisis: War in Afghanistan, two Security Councils, L’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, and the Conseil Européen. The committee of “UN News” walked around, made interviews, and posted a lot of gossip and tittle-tattle on twitter. Even one of our delegation fall victim to them.

At noon it was lunch time in the highly overcrowded canteen. But after a waiting time of two hours finally everyone got something to eat. The meal was pretty good, but anyway, on the next day many decided to eat somewhere else.

The two session days were shaped by many heating, but also fruitful discussions. In the end many committees passed resolutions, but unfortunately some failed. But of course, we MUN people don’t take us too serious: the last session ended with the bestowal of fun awards, like “Best looking guy”, “The party animal” or the “Worst understandable accent”.

Saturday evening it was time to say “Au revoir” at the Ponton Farewell Ball. The last social event of the PIMUN occurred on a yacht in the Seine, with a party dance floor under deck. The music was loud, the DJ good and the dancing people brought the boat to swing. This event protracted until the late morning hours.

It was clear that several people came late at the next day, to the biggest conference PIMUN was able to give: The traditional plenary session in the Great Plenary Hall at the UNESCO headquarter. Beside the impressive hall the UNESCO headquarter has a formidable art exhibition, with artworks from Picasso, or “L’homme qui marché”, the world’s most expensive statue. At the end of the session there was finally the closing ceremony, where the awards for the “Best Delegate” and the “Honourable Mention” of each committee were presented.

To conclude, the PIMUN was a sensational event, with a lot of fun and a good chance to meet many interesting people from all over the world. This good organized model United Nations combined with that city, which has so much to offer, would be an incredible experience for anyone!

Konstanz Model United Nations Conference 2015 | Day 2

BBQ yesterday after the KonMUN 2015 First session allow the delegates from different places to get to know each other. Not only the classical Bavarian Weißwurst and typical German potato salat, but also a variety of drinks were provided for delegates, chairs, Secretariat and staffs to have a chill talk after the formal debate. Moreover, we also played volleyball which made a lot of fun!

At the second day, the coffee break was also set up by our volunteering members from our organization. Moritz and Jonathan have also brought some flowers to decorate this room in a classy style.

Sometimes, a small committee is also an advantage: Delegates are able to participate more and each one can obtain enough time to speak, to write and to train their negotiation’s skills. It facilitates the brain-storming and raises the quality and effectiveness of the whole discussion, which leads to a fruitful result and much fun.
Raising Placards

Unlike the vague discussion yesterday, today the delegates talked more about details and tried to establish a discussion agenda widely accepted by the most of participants. Unmoderated caucus dominated the session in the morning, through which the delegates tried to find a common ground or even shape the blocs and coalitions. Apparently, there are two blocs working on each working paper and draft resolution right now: The one led by UK, USA and France, the other led by China since Russia is missing. On human rights the developing countries and the developed ones seem to have different approach, it would be interesting to see how the divergence between them was conducted. The photo below is showing the bloc of the developing countries;
Developing Countries

… And here the developed countries.
Developed Countries

Chairs are also playing an important role to moderate the procedure of discussions. The most powerful thing they have is probably the timing-control.
Chairs: Power Centre

USA and China have somehow personal conflicts in the session and criticizing on each other’s human rights situation. Will there be some common grounds between two powers?
USA & CHINA: Who rules the committee?

Our Delegates are taking notes and writing things to each other all the time, which shows their high engagement and commitment for the nation represented and the common profit of homo sapiens.
Hardworking Delegates

At lunch time we had pizza and salat and again, variety of drinks. Let some energy flow in for presenting the ultimate solution.
Lunch time

Last but not the least: KonMUN Mafia is refusing all kinds of paparazzi. But this motion simply failed.
KonMUN Mafia

Still, we are looking forward to more progress, especially on working papers and draft resolutions tomorrow!
